So that's my rant concluded, but I'd like to end things with a Robot Chicken Halo skit, about Master Chief not removing his helmet, since that's the direction I think the show should have taken regarding this question. I'm sorry, but John could of talked her down without putting his life in danger. Whereas Master Chief puts his life in danger by removing his helmet, giving the insurrectionist a chance to blow his head off. One being his life was endangered, but also removing his helmet had consequences. The times where we did see his face were brief, and were major events. 343 and the writers also can't say that, never showing his face wouldn't of worked, because it's been working with the Mandalorian for some time now. These are notable events where we clearly see his human side without ever seeing his face, and that's where the magic was. We know he's human, we've always known his human side and we've seen that side numerous times before, such as when he finds Keyes absorbed by the proto gravemind, rescuing Cortana from the flood infested High Charity, and Johnson's death. 343 said it was done to show his "human side" an argument I'm frankly tired of hearing, and they clearly don't understand his character. The fact that Master Chief has shown his face in the Halo programme has sparked outrage among fans, and the cause for this can be traced back to the Halo. Hell, they didn't even tease the reveal, they show his face on the very first episode, there's no build up to it, the reveal was way too easy and too soon. I cannot help be reminded of the saying: "You should never meet your heroes" I understand that statement now. Regret Legendary WR attempts New sub badges and emotes :) facereveal. Once the helmet was removed I was no longer charmed by the mysterious super soldier before me who protects humanity, because what we see is just a man. Check out this Halo: The Master Chief Collection stream from 4 hours ago. ![]() It would require a very dramatic moment to upend five games of tradition - perhaps even Master Chief's exit from the franchise. Other than that brief glimpse at the end of Halo 4, the games have not depicted Master Chief outside of his armor. Halo debuts on Paramount Plus on March 24.I'm sorry to say, but the reveal arguably should never have happened, it completely destroys the mystery and mystic around the character and it instantly broke immersion for me. His eyes are sunken and colorless, and he bears a deep scar on the right side of his face. However, following a 59% Rotten Tomatoes score (opens in new tab) after its South by Southwest debut, I’m not particularly hopeful of that. Here’s just hoping that the Halo TV show can make up for its controversial decisions by being a good show. Power armor or not, I was expecting at least some scarring - or even a crew cut. The fact that they just gave Schreiber a haircut and called it a day isn’t going to help matters.įor a career soldier with almost 30 years of experience fighting aliens, terrorists, and insurrectionist militias, you’d think he'd have picked up a few souvenirs from battle. After 20 years of seeing a helmet, and only a helmet, seeing anything was going to go down as well as the weirdly-human looking Cortana. Lucky for some, I guess.īut therein lies the problem in revealing the Chief's face like this. ![]() ![]() Schreiber, despite being 43, still looks about 35. Master Chief was born in 2511, making him roughly 41 years old by the events of the first Halo game. I can’t help but feel this Chief looks way too young to be the character O'Connor (and the books) described. The first Halo novel trilogy described his appearance in so much detail that back in 2012 343 Industries franchise development director Frank O’Conner told Eurogamer (opens in new tab) he believes it could have been taken to a police sketch artist, noting "That police sketch artist would then produce a perfectly accurate rendering of an older man, almost painfully pale, almost albino white, with pale blue eyes, reddish hair, close cropped to a skin head, and maybe the last remnants of freckles he had when he was a kid." It's not like Chief hasn't been described in great detail since the beginning. ![]() It’s a look you wouldn’t expect from a grizzly-voiced supersoldier who was conscripted into the military at age 6 and has been on the front lines since the age of 14. Also this Master Chief is way, way prettier than he should be.
